Otaku

Graphic Design/Web Design
Project Overview
A compilation of Takashi Murakami's works, within the framework of his obsessions; explored in two parts.
- A book with beautiful photos and in depth articles about Murakami's works and his obsessions.
- A website as a companion to the book, with a focus on the fun and creativity that Murakami brings to his art.
The Work Behind the Project
Analysis of Murakimi's works, creative decision making on which works to focus on, how to collect them and portray them together based on what themes.
In the end I decided to build the project through the lens of his obsessions.
Then I created a style guide based on the focus on his obsessions and how to highlight each one, then moved on to create a book and then a website.
Ai/Ps/Id
Student Project
Feb 2020 - June 2020
A collection of works examining his otaku obsession with flattening the distinction between fine and low art, and how that led to his frequent and experimental collaborations.

Featuring a book and a companion website, I dove into the crazy work and life of Takashi Murakami. I was inspired by his obsessions, something that to me seemed to connect back to the Otaku culture in Japan (hence the name of the project).

Part of the project brief was to collect at least two articles to use in the book and website each.
I may have over done it...
The final book clocked in at over 500 pages. Oops.

I couldn't help myself. He's such an enigmatic artist that there is so so much information out there, interviews and videos, etc. There was so much to sift through and at the end I really felt like I had to include all these articles to understand him and his obsessions.

For the website I chose to take a different approach. While the book is full of bright colors and big fonts, it is still more classic art book than not. But for the website I designed using an overt grid system and bright colors to compliment his pop approach to art.
